MAC & Marcel Wanders: Catharina Lipstick and Aleydis Gloss Review and Swatches

MAC's latest collection is a collaboration with industrial designer Marcel Wanders. Beauty Squared previewed the collection here. Over the weekend I picked up two pieces from the collection - Aleydis lipgloss and Catharina lipstick - both bright pink.

Of course, it is the packaging that's the big draw for this collection. The brush and cosmetic packaging all have a curvy, candlestick shape to them and they differ from the regular MAC packaging. I photographed Aleydis and Catharina next to a MAC Sparklegloss and regular MAC lipstick to show the difference in the packaging. The boxes are bright white with the ornate scrolled MAC & Marcel Wanders logo on the outside and a decorated black inside. The lipsticks particularly are hefty and thick and feel dramatically different than the smooth, bullet-shaped tubes of regular MAC lipstick.

Let's look at Catharina and I swear I didn't just buy it because of its name!

The tubes, as well, have designs on them.
Catharina lipstick.
Catharina is a bright fuchsia pink cream lipstick. It goes on very smoothly and is a powerful pop of colour - so be warned!

Swatching this I thought how similar Catharina was to MAC's Girl About Town, one of my favourite lipsticks and also a bright pink fuchsia. So I swatched Girl About Town next to it.

Girl About Town has more purple to it than Catharina but they're pretty close as you can see. I like them both. I'm wearing Girl About Town in this blog post and in this one as well.

And here's Aleydis lipgloss.

Aleydis lipgloss
Aleydis is a bright pink fuchsia lipgloss with purple and pink glitter. The texture is very smooth and creamy and it's non-sticky but it doesn't slide right off either. They're similar to MAC's Cremesheen glosses but with more pigment.

I love bright fuchsia pink lips. Can you tell?

I recommend both of these shades if you're a fan of bright pink gloss and lipstick too. Aleydis is more wearable since it's sheer but if you want a pop of colour in your lips, go for Catharina and try layering the two. Or try layering Aleydis over a different shade lipstick - you'll get a different look.

I recommend taking a look at the MAC & Marcel Wanders collection - the lipsticks alone are worth checking out since the tubes are so cool looking.

What do you think? What did you pick up from this collection?

P.S. The rest of the makeup I'm wearing in these photos can partly be found here. I'm also wearing MAC Venomous Villains Magically Cool Powder in Truth & Light and MAC Mineralize Blush in Warm Soul. My mascara is Benefit Bad Girl.

  2. Hi Jenn, I checked out Gesina lipstick (red) too from this collection - if the MAC girl hadn't told me how good Catharina looked on me I would've gotten Gesina. But I am in love with the bright pink, it's much more modern. Thanks!!
