Cult Cosmetics Nail Polish San Vicente Review, Swatches and Photos

Late last year I cancelled my subscription to Cult Cosmetics Black Box subscription program because I decided with my large nail polish collection, it made more sense to choose my own colours. Cult's "one and you're done" formula is still one I like, so during their recent "buy one, get two free" sale I hauled a bunch of polishes I had been eyeing.

Today I have the new shade "San Vicente" for review ($9.99 US, ships to Canada). Described by Cult as a "hyper-pigmented glitter mahogany polish", San Vicente looks like a slightly red toned, metallic milk chocolate brown in the bottle. On the nails it changes into a metallic silver taupe - it's so packed with silver shimmer that the red and brown undertones are much less noticeable. Photo in natural light, NC 35/40 skin, one coat polish + Seche Vite top coat.

Cult Cosmetics San Vicente (one coat + Seche Vite top coat)

This polish is highly pigmented, is opaque in one coat and flows fairly smoothly onto the nail. Because metallic polishes tend to show brush strokes, you do need to be a little more careful with how you apply this. I did notice that if I didn't "nail" (excuse the pun) the application the first time and I tried to retouch the polish pulled and became patchy. Of course, this would not be an issue if you went with two coats.

This was the "wild card" colour in my Cult haul. Brown is not a colour I typically look for in nail polish, but I knew I didn't have a dupe for it. This polish on the nail is surprisingly flattering - it's neutral but still a little flashy, and I can't help but think that it's the nail polish equivalent of my holy grail eye shadow, the discontinued Shu Uemura ME Silver 945.

Wear time is about 3 days without chipping, but that is standard for me with most brands. Cult's nail polishes are toluene, formaldehyde, camphor, formaldehyde resin and cruelty free.

Artdeco Glam Couture Eyeshadow in Blissful Taupe Review and Swatches

Artdeco is a German cosmetics brand available at select Shoppers Drug Marts in Canada. I picked up a few of their products recently. This is their Blissful Taupe eyeshadow from their Glam Couture collection.

The Glam Couture collection had six eyeshadows - shimmery, creamy powder textured, metallic nude shades. The look of the product is stunning, fanned out in a fan or seashell shape.

The shadows are similar to MAC's Extra Dimension eyeshadows - a cream/powder texture.

Blissful Taupe is a shimmering taupe shade, metallic and multi-dimensional. It has a creamy texture and is stunningly metallic. It goes on beautifully and blends well due to the creaminess of it. It has excellent pigmentation. Blissful Taupe is a stunning neutral, easy to wear on its own or as part of a look.

It wore very well over a primer for about eight hours at which time it began to fade oh-so-slightly. I didn't try it without a primer, since my eyelids are very oily and require a primer with every eyeshadow I've ever worn.

This was the first Artdeco eyeshadow I have tried and I am very impressed.

MAC Magnetic Nude Sensual Sparks Lipstick: Photos, Swatches and Review

MAC's Magnetic Nudes collection was made available in stores on December 26 in Canada and after seeing all the online buzz about this collection, I did what I don't normally do on Boxing Day. I went shopping. I bought a lipstick, two eyeshadows and a blush from the Magnetic Nudes collection. This post will look at the Extra Dimension Blush in Autoerotique.

But first, MAC didn't send us the preview photos and info about this collection (or Huggable Lipcolours or Punk Couture, etc) so here is some info about this gorgeous, shimmery collection.

Glimmering metallics and natural nudes redefine winter opulence. Skin is radiant with Extra Dimension Skinfinish. Smoky eyes get a metal effect, shaded with vibrant Extra Dimension Eye Shadow. Fluidline shines with a steely touch, while Opulash provides a powerful finish. Flushed nudes in Extra Dimension Blush, Lipstick and Lipglass are subtle yet sexy, for a look that’s naturally magnetic. Apply with the 128 Split Fibre Cheek and 235 Split Fibre All Over Eye Brushes.

This collection will sell out. So if you like the sound of metallic nude shades, including peachy tones and rose-gold, get thee to a MAC counter immediately! There are tonnes of swatches online as well - check out Temptalia's reviews and photos here, and Makeup and Beauty Blog's overview here. Trust me, it's gorgeous and there's something here for
everyone.

This post will look at the Magnetic Nude Amplified Creme Lipstick in Sensual Sparks.

Sensual Sparks is described as a dirty cool caramel. It's an orangey-brown and very creamy in consistency.

Sensual Sparks Lipstick swatched on NW15 skintone.

I definitely don't have any colour like this in my collection. I rarely wear a "brown" shade on my lips, stick with mostly peach and pink tones when I do a nude lip. It's funny, I got this home and wondered if I mistakenly asked for this one instead of Close Contact since that one (creamy peach) is definitely more up my alley. But once on, I like Sensual Sparks (I think). There's enough peachiness to it that it doesn't fall too neutral. It's not one I will wear regularly, I don't think and I think I'll have to do makeup looks that will call on Sensual Sparks specifically since it's so different from anything I usually wear.

But less about me and more about the lipstick! It's one of MAC's Amplified Creme lipsticks which means it's very creamy in consistency, has good pigmentation and is long-wearing. It glides on beautifully and feels really good once on - creamy. There's no trace of my natural lip colour showing through. And it wears very nicely as well - I would say it lasts about 3-4 hours on.

Sensual Sparks is limited edition.

Sleek i-Divine Au Naturel Palette Review, Photos and Swatches

I recently ordered a few products from Sleek Makeup, a UK makeup company. I'd been hearing and reading a fair bit about their very well-priced eyeshadow palettes, highly pigmented blushes and BB cream online and the cost made it very accessible, despite the exchange rate and shipping. More on all of that later though...

This post takes a look at one of the two eyeshadow palettes I ordered, the Au Naturel Palette. It costs $9.99 US and contains 12 eyeshadows in a combination of matte and shimmer textures.

Here's what Sleek has to say about this palette:

Sleek MakeUP's legendary i-Divine palettes are 12 shades of super-pigmented, long lasting mineral based eyeshadow, designed to suit all. Each i-Divine contains pearlescent shades, which contain mica particles that highlight and illuminate giving an overall radiant effect.

Au Naturel is an array of matte and shimmery eyeshadows providing a subtle yet contoured effect for day, that can be built up for a gorgeous evening smoky effect using the velvety browns and shimmering fawns.

12 x 1.1g/12x 0.03 oz

Some packaging photos follow. Each i-Divine palette comes in a black box.

The palette itself is made from matte black plastic with the logo in shiny black.

To give you a sense of the size of these, here it is in my hand.

Back of the palette
Each palette lid is a large mirror, which is a very nice feature. You could carry this palette in your purse for touch-ups during the day and/or creating an evening look for after work. Each palette also comes with a double-tipped sponge applicator. You can choose to work with these or not, but I prefer using brushes. The soft texture of some of the eyeshadows work a lot better with brushes than these applicators - more on the texture later though.

The palettes can be a bit tricky to open. They're quite thin so there's not a lot to hold on to and you have to hold the base a certain way and the lid a certain way to get it open.

Each palette also comes with a clear plastic overlay with the names of each shade of eyeshadow on it. It's a nice touch to have names for each shade, but Sleek doesn't appear to sell any of these as individual eyeshadows or have replacement pans available. It would also be better to have the names on the back of the palette rather than on this clear plastic sheet which I'll likely end up throwing out since it falls out every time I open the palette anyway.

And here we go with the swatches! I bet you're curious about this inexpensive, multi-shadow palette, right?

Starting from the left side of the palette and doing four at a time...

Clockwise from top left: Nougat, Nubuck, Moss, Conker

L-R: Nougat, Conker, Nubuck, Moss

Nougat is the most matte of these four, with Nubuck next with a very soft shimmer, Moss being slightly more shimmery and Conker being quite frosty.

Nougat is the lightest shade in the whole palette, and you might expect to be chalky since it's so white and matte. It's not. All of the shadows in this palette apply well, though some are creamier in texture than others. Nougat is pigmented but not so that it's opaque. Pigmentation-wise it's a little on the disappointing side, but I personally would not wear a highly pigmented white shade. This I could wear as a highlight very easily.

Conker is a shimmery red-bronze. When applying this to my arm for the swatches, this was the one of the four that broke apart the most and had the most fall-out. It has great pigmentation and can be blended out for a more subtle effect.

Nubuck is warm taupe-grey shade. I liked the texture of this one the best of the four. It's one of those great colours that would suit both warm and cool skintones.

Moss is an antique brown-gold shade. It applies with a buttery texture and has a moderate amount of fall-out.

On to the middle four shadows:

Clockwise from top left: Cappuccino, Honeycomb, Mineral Earth, Bark

L-R: Cappuccino, Bark, Honeycomb, Mineral Earth
Cappuccino swatches similar to Nubuck, but with more golden-brown than grey. It has that look of cappuccino foam - milk mixed with coffee. The texture is a bit powdery and pigmentation is low on this one. You'll probably want to apply a few layers to see it properly on your skin.

Bark is a dark brown with a touch of red. It has excellent pigment but it does have a powdery texture, so anticipate some fall-out. This one is better not too blended out. It can go muddy.

Honeycomb is a warm, soft peachy-gold with good pigmentation. This is a lovely warm colour with a texture that's buttery and not too powdery.

Mineral Earth is a frosty bronze-red-brown with excellent pigmentation but some fall-out. It reminds me of MAC's Blue Brown Pigment without the green iridescence.
And the final four shadows:
Clockwise from top left: Toast, Taupe, Noir, Regal

L-R: Toast, Regal, Taupe, Noir
Toast is a bright yellow-peach shade with a hint of gold to it. Very pretty, moderately pigmented and a little on the powdery side.

Regal is a plum-brown with excellent pigmentation but, as you can see in the photo above, it's a bit powdery. Beware of fall-out!

Taupe is a very wearable, very pretty shimmery peach-gold shade. It's a good highlight shade.Noir is a deep shade that's not quite black. It's got some grey and a little green to it. I really like this shade smudged along the lashline. It's like soot, if that makes sense. Powdery and deep but soft.

In summary, the Au Naturel i-Divine Palette is a mixed bag in terms of texture and pigmentation. To me all the shades are workable and wearable, despite some being lightly pigmented and some having issues with fall-out and powderiness. Some of the shades I can see myself wearing over and over and over again, and some I won't naturally be drawn to using. I especially like Noir, Mineral Earth and Nubuck, but also Bark, Conker and Moss. There are none of these shades that I dislike. I like that there are a mix of neutral shades ("flat" colours) and more stand-out shades (colour and shimmer) in this palette. There are so many different looks that can be created.

In terms of cost, this is a very good palette. $10 (approximately) gets you 12 eyeshadows that range from average to good quality!

A few things I've discovered about ordering Sleek products online: I looked into a few different ways to get my hands on Sleek products. You can order through the Sleek website directly, or find some products through Ebay. You can also order through Superdrug if you live in the UK. US residents, note that you cannot order eyeshadow from the Sleek website due to shipping regulations, but Canadian residents have no such issues. I ended up going through Sleek directly. Prices were in US$. Shipping was very reasonable. I paid $6.49 US in shipping for an order that came to just over $50 US. There was no duty once it arrived either. I was very happy with the cost! No added charges.

Another thing you should know was that it took about a week and a half for my order to arrive. From the UK. That's fantastic! I was shocked as I expected to have to wait for a month or more as I have ordering things from the UK in the past!

I was also happy that none of the products I'd ordered were damaged when they arrived.

Your turn! Have you used Sleek products? Have you tried their eyeshadows? Let us know in the comments below!

MAC RiRi Hearts MAC Bad Girl Gone Good Blush Review, Swatches and Photos

In addition to the Cream Colour Base in Diamonds, Bad Girl Gone Good powder blush is my other favourite product from the limited edition RiRi Hearts MAC collection. If you missed it's launch in MAC stores and online, you still have a good chance to haul it tomorrow at MAC counters in The Bay ($27.50 CA/$23.00 US).

Photos on NC 35/40 skin, in natural light. Apologies for the somewhat dim light as these were taken in the late afternoon.

Described by MAC as a "warm copper", in the pan Bad Girl Gone Good looks fairly dark and orangey-brown like a bronzer. On my skin, it transforms into a medium dark peach with slight brown undertones. This is definitely a fall blush colour - it's dusky and earthy - not your usual bright pop of summer coral. It took me a long time to appreciate brown based shades of blush such as this one because I always thought brown based shades would look muddy against the skin. However, what makes brown based blush shades great is that they usually are very neutral, and therefore are great to pair with more dramatic eyes or lips.

RiRi Hearts MAC Bad Girl Gone Good

It applies smoothly, blends well and is buildable. This would be a great colour to pick up for medium to dark skin tones. On lighter skins this could be a great contour/peachy bronzer shade. Despite my overwhelmingly large collection of blushes, I can't think of one I already own that is like this colour. Recommended!
