Bite Beauty Vivid Luminous Creme Lipstick Duo Tangerine and Lingonberry

Bite Beauty has really been setting itself apart from other beauty brands, with its food-grade lip products, its monthly limited release shades, their line of hand-cut Butter Cream lipsticks (cut straight across for a creamier texture), their Manhattan Lip Lab where you can have your own custom colour made (I did it earlier this year! Read about it here), and their focus on lip health and the dimension, definition and drama of lipstick and gloss.

Since Bite is a Canadian company (based in Toronto), they recently released a Canadian exclusive, limited edition collection inspired by the colours of autumn and the changing colours of maple leaves. The five lipsticks are scented with maple, and if you're interested, they're going fast. Check them out in Sephora stores in person, or online

Recently while picking up something else at Sephora, I was drawn to the P.O.P. display (seriously, can anyone ignore it?), and saw this cute little double-ended Bite Beauty lipstick. There were two choices - one with two neutral shades and one with two vivid shades. If you've been following this blog for a while, you know which one I gravitated towards.

Yup, I went for the vivid duo, the Bite Beauty Luminous Crème Lipstick Duo in Lingonberry/Tangerine. Each lipstick is 0.05 oz and it cost me $15 CDN.

Bite Beauty's Luminous Crème Lipstick is their signature product. Here's the description from their website:

The exceptionally smooth lipstick that delivers lush, long-lasting colour and moisture-rich coverage... Organic fruit butters create a creamy texture that conditions and nourishes lips with every use while antioxidant-rich Resveratrol fights free radicals and helps reduce the appearance of lines.

The full ingredient list can be seen on the packaging photo above.

At 0.05 oz Lipstick Duo is smaller than a standard Bite Beauty Luminous Crème lipstick (0.15 oz), but you get two colours for less than half the price, and really, how often do any of us finish a tube of lipstick before it goes off? This is what I like the best about this Lipstick Duo - two beautiful lipstick colours that I will likely be able to use most of. For only $15! Full-size Bite Beauty Luminous Crème Lipstick is $28 CDN. Plus the Lipstick Duo is smaller than carrying two full lipstick tubes and the shades are perfect for summer. I think that all makeup brands should do this, especially for trendy shades that you'll probably only wear for a few months.

For size comparison, here is the custom Bite Beauty lipstick I had made in New York City earlier this year (top), and the Lipstick Duo (bottom). Both have subtantial smooth, matte grey packaging. The Lipstick Duo has two small tube lids on either end, and each lipstick twists up individually.

Let's take a look at the shades now. First up is Lingonberry, a bright purple-leaning fuchsia.

On the opposite end is Tangerine, a vivid corally red-orange.

Here are both shades swatched on the back of my hand (NW15 skintone). These shades both run on the cool side and they're great against my pink-undertone fair skin. However, if your skin is darker than mine, don't shy away as these are well-pigmented and will pop on darker skin.

They glide on very smoothly. These are creamy lipsticks, but they're controllable. They have a sheen to them and are strongly pigmented. They slide over my lips with great ease and do not accentuate the fine lines that are developing slowly.

L-R: Tangerine and Lingonberry

And here they are on my lips.

First is Lingonberry. I am not wearing lipliner with it, nor have I blotted it.

And here is Tangerine. Again, no lipliner, but it has been blotted. Otherwise it'd have the same sheen as Lingonberry.

The wear time of both of these is the same for the other Bite Beauty lipstick (the custom one) I've tried. They last about 4-5 hours before needing a touch-up and my lips don't feel overly dry.

Dear Bite Beauty, more of these please! I love getting two lipsticks for less than the price of one and in sizes that I'll have no trouble wearing down to their bases!

Bright Lips for Summer

There are so many beautiful blossoms out right now, as spring turns into summer. The trees and gardens are bursting with flowers in all kinds of colours. Beauty too - spring and summer always means bright lip colours.

I thought I'd go through my lip collection and give you some inspiration for lipstick and glosses that will give you that bright pop of colour and take you through the warmer months.

Most of my lipsticks are featured here. Bright lip colours are a staple of my beauty look. There are only a handful I didn't swatch because they're neutrals or nudes.

MAC Force of Love lipstick (matte)
MAC Made With Love lipstick (lustre)
MAC Costa Chic lipstick (frost)
MAC Love Goddess lipstick (satin).
I think I might have a problem. The first step is admitting it, right?

So how do you wear bright lips in the summertime?
Bright lips are an easy way to wear colour. In summer, makeup needs to look and feel lighter, so switch from a foundation to a tinted moisturizer or a BB cream, and use a cream or liquid blush. Go lighter on the eyes and use a primer to keep your eyeshadow from melting. Use water-resistant mascara. Keep everything other than your lip colour soft and neutral.

NARS Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil in Mexican Rose

So what lip colour should you wear?

It depends on your skintone what colours will give you the bright lip look. You can find bright lip colours in orange, coral, pink, red and purple and combinations of all kinds. Or if you're feeling adventurous, go with blue or green or yellow! Knowing your skin's undertone is the best place to start. You're either cool, warm, neutral or olive. Here's how to determine what your undertone is. My undertone is cool, so cooler colours look best on me.

OCC Stained Gloss in Jealous
OCC Lip Tar in Vintage
MAC Pro Longwear Lipcreme in Red Dwarf
MAC Lipstick in Prepare for Pleasure (cremesheen)
MAC Lipstick in Absolute Power (matte)
If you are a bit shy about wearing a bright lip, brightly coloured lip glosses can give a pop of colour with far less drama than a lipstick or a lip tar. A bright lip colour brings light to your face.

Urban Decay Lip Junkie Lipgloss in Crush
MAC Plushglass in Plus Luxe

I hope this has helped you get inspired! Wearing a bright lip colour makes you feel just as colourful and lively as the summer weather. Try it tomorrow!

Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Stained Glosses in Meta and Jealous: Review, Photos and Swatches

A friend picked me up two of the brand new OCC Stained Glosses in New York last week. I had asked her to get me Meta and Jealous and she did. Little did I know how identical they'd look, in the tubes at least! I'm glad they're labelled.

The Stained Glosses are a gloss version of OCC's Lip Tars. From the OCC website:

OCC's Lip Tar: Stained Gloss™ is our newest texture option from the Lip Tar™ range, combining the hyper-opacity of Lip Tar™ with a casual glossy finish that's ready-to-wear from its first slick application to the high impact stain it leaves behind. Lip Tar: Stained Gloss™ can be worn alone or layered over your favorite existing shades for added depth, dimension and a glossy finish that lasts!

"OCC Fans have been asking to see a new take on Lip Tar™ that remains true to our pigment-potency heritage, while providing a more see-through, glossy look," says David Klasfeld, CEO and Creative Director, "We took our inspiration from stained glass windows and lighting gels. Transparent yet concentrated colour that no one would dare call sheer."

The Stained Glosses come in the same packaging as the Lip Tars - small plastic resealable  bags with an information card and a small brush for application. Very smart considering the the tricky application of both the Lip Tars and the Stained Glosses and it makes it easy to carry them around with you in your purse or even your pocket.

Like the Lip Tars, the Stained Glosses have a liquid, highly pigmented texture and a mint scent. Unlike the Lip Tars, however, the Stained Glosses are sheer, translucent.
Top: Anime Lip Tar
Bottom L to R: Jealous and Meta Stained Glosses

First up, let's look at Meta.

Information card explaining how to apply the Stained Gloss.
Meta Stained Gloss is described by OCC as red orange shellac. It definitely reads more pink once on, though (photos below).

Here is Meta on me. I'd say it reads more watermelony than red-orange.

And here's Jealous. OCC describes it as popsicle pink/red. It's definitely more pink than Meta, a cooler pink.

I even tried applying Meta to my top lip and Jealous to my bottom lip but I still couldn't discern any real difference between the two. That's how close they are in colour.

The bright colours of both of these shades is fantastic. If you like bright colours, these are a fantastic. I can't get over the look of these. They almost glow.

The Stained Glosses are a bit challenging to apply. You definitely need a mirror and a lip brush and some time. Unlike other glosses, which often you can just swipe on without a mirror, these take some time and attention due to the pigment.

I like the consistency and definitely the appearance - the delicate glossy sheen of these is in contrast with the intense pigmentation. These are slightly easier to wear than the Lip Tars, as they are lighter in both appearance and in feel.

You only need a tiny amount of product, but you need a little more than the Lip Tars. I found that with the Stained Glosses, the pigmentation easily got patchy when I blended it across my lips, so I needed to add more to make it even.

I really like these, though I wish they were easier to apply and wear. These wear OK, though they do come off more easily than the Lip Tars, being slicker in consistency. The pigment leaves a residue behind once the glossiness wears off, so it's not like eating off your lipstick.
